ReplyDeleteSo few books mention the necessities of life. Funny thing is, I always wonder. In a series of books we wrote about the future of Britland, my writing partner Edith Parzefall and I made sure our adventurers stopped to drink and withdraw to a private spot. Hehe. Blog on!

Of course they never mentioned the outhouse! It just wasn't "done." Women NEVER mentioned personal things. I have read diaries of women who mention nothing about about pregnancy until they mention "our little daughter joined us today." etc. It's up there with mentioning (shock!)legs, undergarments, "the women's curse." But it was there, all the same ---- out back where a visitor would not see a woman head that way. Love the pictures!

ReplyDeleteI am a woman in her early 40's and I experienced an outhouse at my great-grandma's up until the age of 5. I have a VIVID memory of the outhouse, especially of my teenage uncle teasing me that snakes were going to bite me on the bum. Stinker! From that point on, I would hold it all day until the "pot" came out in the kitchen at bedtime for anyone who had needed a nightly run. Then I would go. Crazy!
I remember the outhouse when I was very young in Wales...and in my grandma's house. And even though they weren't mentioned in LIW, you know they were used :)

I work in a public library. I always recommend the Little House books for girls who are reading far above their age level.

ReplyDeleteWe had an outhouse "up north" until I was in my teens. I remember all 5 of us piling on the sled so Dad could pull us thru thigh-deep snow to use it before bed when the pipes in the house froze. I'm pretty sure Mom used a bucket, but where's the adventure in that?
