The flares are getting worse and lasting longer. They are becoming intrusive in my daily life. I become nauseated and the pain becomes fairly severe. Along with the other problems, there have been several days when I just cannot venture away from home. Although towards late afternoon and evening I seem to get a reprieve and then at night I begin to feel it again. I have read and read and read more, so I know about food triggers and stress triggers. I know some of the foods to avoid. When I'm having a flare, it doesn't matter what I eat...you would think I would lose weight. :(
A few months ago, I started looking for a job. I've put it on the back burner for now since our business is so busy, but I plan to start looking again soon. And I wonder...how can I work on days (or several in a row) with one of these flares? What do I do? What do you do if you have IBS?
It's really embarrassing to talk about, but I'm looking for someone else who also has the problem. I finally talked to my doctor about it, which is one of the reasons he sent me to have a colonoscopy. At the time, I knew that it was getting worse, but I was going to try to deal with it by making lifestyle changes. If you have it, how do you deal with it? What helps? What do you do during a flare? Do you take any prescriptions to help? What do you do?

It sounds terrible. I have a friend with Crones (spelling) and another with Celiac disease...I have what I laughingly refer to as "inconvenient bowel syndrome". It DOES affect every aspect of your life and people DON'T understand. I wish you luck with your efforts to control your IBS. Going out to work will be a challenge.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry that I cannot help you! But somehow I am sure it will get better!
ReplyDeleteAwwww; choose from another 100 ailments and I'm sure I could empathize; just not this one... common though, so someone will soon trail behind me with experience.
ReplyDeletegood luck!!!

I have crohns disease (correct spelling).
ReplyDeleteFor most of my life beginning at age 17, whenever I tried to "go to town" I'd have to drive over railroad tracks to get there. Just the vibration would make me have to turn around and head back to the bathroom where I'd have to pass about a tablespoon of extremely hot and burning mucous and blood.
The pain is anything BUT a "tummy ache".
Both sisters and one brother have IBD and IBS. You need a colonoscopy for a biopsy to rule out crohns disease and ulcerative colitis.
You can contact me if you prefer, at: danawyzard@yahoo.com and leave IBS in the subject line so I don't accidentally delete your letter.
yeah, I don't suffer from that but I certainly feel for it. When I was anorexic I'd take handfuls of laxatives daily so I know what an inconvenience that type of thing can be.
ReplyDeletePlease take care of yourself and get a good Dr. to see what tests need to be ocmpleted to help you out!
Nope, don't have that condition, but I think I am developing another GI thing called GERD (acid reflux) ... while I don't think this condition is as difficult to manage as Crohns or IBS, it has been a challenge ... upseting my sleeping (checking blogs at 3:30 in the morning because I was awakened with symptoms). I am taking an over the counter med for now and off to the doctor I go if this doesn't do the trick.
ReplyDeleteCrazy as it sounds, any GI thing can be very inconvenient to your life.
Luckily.....I don't have IBS and can't help, but I hope you find some help soon to help with your pain...etc.
ReplyDeleteHugs
I hope you find someone that can help. My Dad has Celiac Sprue or Celiac Disease..he can eat no oats or wheat.
ReplyDeleteI am sure once you get on the correct diet that you will improve some..I hope:)
Gosh, Laura. I sure hope the doc finds a solution for this and/or you find some solutions at home that help. This sounds very uncomfortable to say the least!
ReplyDeleteFeel better soon, girl. I'll be saying some prayers for ya!
The best thing is to have a colonoscopy if you haven't done so already. Hopefully, the doctor will be able to put you on different trial meds until you find what works best. The worst part of the procedure is drinking the trylite (sp?) or whatever form they give you. The colonoscopy itself isn't painful. I also have stomach problems and have found that flaxseed meal is a very natural and helpful solution that you mix in with your cereal. I also try to eat smaller portions. It doesn't make sense that you're not losing some weight. That's why it's important not to postpone the test, as it may be something else. Good luck and I hope you feel better. Julie
ReplyDeleteLaura, Hoping you find answers to your questions.which will help you feel better.
ReplyDeleteLove the picture with Duke & Jim...with the blue ball there, I'm wondering if Duke is thinking about playing when Jim is finished...sitting and waiting for his turn...LOL
I have times when I think I have IBS, but then times I don't. I make sure that I "go" any time after I eat out before getting into the car to drive home and Norm is used to me saying "rest area NOW!" and parking as close to the bathroom as possible. Sometimes it's what I eat but sometimes it's emotions and sometimes it's just doing what the darn thing wants to do. I would say to have a specialist see you and have him / her get you on medication and diet. It's a terrible thing to have - embarrassing and painful. My doctor hasn't done anything because my colonoscopy didn't show anything and I haven't talked to her about it. I just plan my life around it but then, I'm retired. Good luck and hope you get a cure. And thank you for writing about it. This is something that needs to be talked about. Blessings.
